REMEDIAL MASSAGE

Self Massage - Neck & Shoulders

Neck and shoulder massage is helpful for keeping an upright posture and a flexible spine thus helping your running stance.

Tension in the neck and shoulders is one of the most common complaints that I deal with, it is often caused by the position adopted for work. There are habits that can be developed for avoiding the pain caused by muscle tension in these areas and their complications such as headaches. Stretches are useful for this - see below and the self massage article on backs.

The neck and shoulder muscles

The neck is the top portion of the spine; as such it has a limited range of movement, and its muscles are like those of the rest of the backbone. Additionally there are a number of muscles that control movement of the head, particularly designed for balancing the head at the top of the spine with the least effort. The shoulder girdle has a large number of major and minor muscles for controlling arm movements and stabilising the joints.

The purpose

Massaging your neck and shoulders will affect the flexibility of your spine and therefore the range of movement of your hip and leg.

When to do it

The Massage: after a long spell working in one position such as sitting at a computer all day or driving. These activities involve sitting in one position where the head is leaning forward, placing a strain on the supporting muscles of the head.
