REMEDIAL MASSAGE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does the 'Remedial' in remedial massage mean?

The word remedial comes from 'a remedy', a word meaning that which makes something better; used a little like 'remedial' in remedial reading classes for those who need help with reading.

What's the difference between remedial massage and physio?

Remedial massage produces healing. Physiotherapy, broadly speaking from the patient's point of view, provides rehabilitation exercises. Remedial massage removes the obstacles that prevent the body from moving normally, enabling it to to so again. Some physiotherapists do some massage, but generally the body is being forced to move despite being injured. The body will endeavour to heal itself, but without massage the obstructions of damaged tissue remain, affecting movement. My patients often find that once the damaged tissue is removed the body moves normally again without special exercises.

What's the difference between remedial massage and other forms of massage? aromatherapy or holistic massage for example.

Remedial massage is deep tissue massage, it is designed to assist the body to heal by physically removing obstructions, such as scar tissue, adhesions and swelling left at the site of injury. Other massage is designed to soothe, relax and calm. They are different. Remedial massage is often painful at the time, the relaxation may come later when healing is taking place. Patients describe it as 'good pain' because they can feel its beneficial effect even though it feels painful when I work on the damaged muscles.
