THE REALITY OF BREASTFEEDING: CONTENTS

AFTERPAINS

While breastfeeding the womb contracts after delivery and continues to do so for a couple of days. This is caused by the same hormone, oxytocin, that squeezes the milk sacs during let down. These contractions can be really strong, making it difficult to relax while you nurse. They can be just as powerful with a first baby, as I discovered after being told that they only affected you after subsequent babies... It is a small comfort to know that it is good for your body that your womb is contracting well and it means that everything is working properly.
